The People Behind the Weekend

Meet the organizers

Three people, one shared purpose: creating a warm Austin weekend where tango brings dancers together across communities and borders.

Joao Crus, organizer of the Austin Tango Marathon01

Passionate Tango Aficionado

Joao Crus

Joao Crus is a dedicated tango enthusiast who believes in the transformative power of this captivating dance. He sees tango as a universal language that can unite people through enchanting melodies and intricate movement—an art form that transcends boundaries and connects souls in ways words often cannot. He created the Austin Tango Marathon as a vibrant gathering where dancers, enthusiasts, and curious minds can come together to share their love for tango and celebrate its beauty, passion, and inclusivity.

Volunteer Coordinator

Monica Rivera

Relatively new to tango, Monica Rivera is committed to helping the Austin tango community grow and stand out for its level of dancing. In tango she has made more friends in two years than in any other field during her 25 years in Austin. Her dedication, attention to detail, love for tango, and interest in people from all walks of life make her a key part of the marathon's volunteer program. Whether you are visiting Austin for the first time or are a familiar face in the local scene, Monica will help you feel at home.

Public Relations

Monica Cravotta

Monica Cravotta has been with the Austin Tango Marathon since it began in 2024—first as a volunteer, then as a behind-the-scenes co-host with Joao, and now helping manage the event and lead Public Relations. Every year she grows more enamored with tango's beauty and the magical, meditative presence it asks of us. Together with Joao, Monica Rivera, and the wonderful volunteer team, she looks forward to creating a welcoming experience that fosters connection and community for everyone who joins.
